What is an “Alcohol Baby” or FASD?

Whatever alcohol a pregnant woman drinks passes directly through her umbilical cord to her baby. Alcohol is a chemical solvent strong enough to take the finish from furniture, so it burns away cells forming within the child. The resulting damage can be physical (heart defects, ear abnormalities, facial deformations), or mental (retardation, instability, learning disabilities). The condition is medically described as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).

In this website, anyone with these injuries is called an “alcohol baby”.
